US plays down fears of war with Iran

The United States has played down any prospects of war with Iran or any immediate dangers from its nuclear drive but warned that the world was ready to confront its “provocative” policies.

Iran’s test firing of a medium range missile that it said could reach Israel drew anger in Washington but US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the United States and Iran were not close to war.

Crude Oil Rises as Iran Test-Fires Missile, Dollar Declines

Crude oil rose, rebounding from its biggest decline in three months, after Iran test-fired a long- range missile capable of reaching Israel and the dollar fell.

Oil recovered as the Iranian exercise, reported on state television, heightened concerns of an attack by Israel on the Middle East’s second-biggest oil producer. The dollar dropped against the yen and euro after the missile test, making commodities priced in the U.S. currency cheaper.

Defiant Iran angers US with missile test

Iran on Wednesday test-fired a missile whose range puts Israel within reach, angering the United States amid growing fears that the standoff over the contested Iranian nuclear drive could lead to war.

The Shahab-3 was among a broadside of nine missiles fired off in the early morning from an undisclosed location in the Iranian desert, state-run Arabic channel Al-Alam and its English counterpart Press-TV reported.

Ahmadinejad Says `There Won’t Be War,’ Pledges Peace

Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad dismissed the possibility of a war with the U.S. and Israel over his country’s nuclear work, saying Iran is trying to avoid conflict.

“We’re making the utmost effort for providing peace and security at the world level,” the Iranian president told reporters today in Kuala Lumpur, where he is attending a summit of the Eight Islamic Developing Countries. “Don’t worry, there won’t be any war in the future. Mainly they are focusing on some sort of propaganda or psychological war.”
